Banat is a south-western region of the country; it has a rather dry, Mediterranean climate, different from the one that can be found in most of Romania. Until 1918 this region was under Habsburg Dynasty’s domination. Nearly 1900 years before, the Romans built a water resort at Baile Herculane.
In the vicinity of Mount Domogled there is a natural reservation that spreads on a surface of 60000 ha, and in the Semenic Mountains there are a few small ski resorts.
The capital of Banat, Timisoara, is the city where the 1989’s revolution was started. Known as “the city of parks and gardens”, it is the third largest city in Romania.
Timisoara has become the symbol of liberty during the 1989’s Revolution. The local people are extremely proud that they belong to “The First Free City”.
