Romania is a country located in the center of Europe. It borders upon Ukraine and The Moldavia Republic at north and east, Hungary and Serbia at west and Bulgaria at south.
Romania is a Carpathian and Danubian country, with an exit to the Black Sea, and a varied relief, harmonically divided: mountains 31%, hills and plateaus 33%, plains 36%. The capital and the largest city is Bucharest. Since 29 March, 2004, Romania is a member of NATO and since 1 January 2007, of the European Union.
Taken as a whole, the Romanian climate is temperate, continental, specific to Central Europe, with four distinctive seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The average annual temperatures oscillate between 22°C and 24°C during summer, and -3°C to -5°C during winter.
The flora and fauna have an unchallengeable economical and touristic importance. Depending on the latitude, altitude and the particularities of the relief, the vegetation has an obvious multi-staged laying.
In the area of the plains there are: the hare, the ground squirrel, the hamster, the mole rat and amongst birds: the quail, the partridge and the bustard (species protected by law). In Dobrudja there are the land turtle and the viper.
In the woods on the hills there are: the wild boar and the badger, the wolf, the fox, the wild cat, and also species from the neighbouring areas, such as the hare, the squirrel, the deer. Remarkable amongst birds are the wood-pecker and the chaffinch an also, by colonizing, the pheasant.
In the woods of beech and coniferous trees, that overlaps the mountain area, there are: the bear, the stag, the lynx, then the capercaillie, the peanut hen, and in the alpine area the black goat and the eagle appear frequently.
The aquatic fauna is dominated by piscicultural species, represented by the trout- in the mountain waters; carp, pike, bream, zander- in the plain area and in the Danube Delta. In the Danube there are the sturgeon, the stor sturgeon and the starlet- that come here from the Black Sea to lay their eggs. In the Black Sea there are blue herrings, turbots, horse mackerels, gudgeons etc.
